LIMURU, Kenya: African renowned Novelist and Academic Prof Ngugi wa Thiong’o‘s children, who have been sponsoring children from poor homes in Limuru for the past decade through their late mother’s scholarship organization, Nyambura Foundation, held a get-together on Sunday with beneficiaries and their parents in Limuru town.
Prof Thiong’o’s sons – Prof Mukoma wa Ngugi, Tee Ngugi, Nducu wa Ngugi, and daughter Wanjiku wa Ngugi – who are all published authors and are all living in the USA except Tee, have been sponsoring ten children living in Limuru from diverse poor backgrounds for ten years.
The foundation is named after Prof Ngugi wa Thiong’o’s first wife Nyambura who died in 1996.
The initiative, they have established in their late mother’s honour, offers scholarships upto form four level. The eldest beneficiary has finished University education from Masinde Muliro University in Western Kenya.
Present at the event were Prof Mukoma – who launched his book in Nairobi on Monday and his younger brother Tee – a columnist with the East African, writer, singer and songwriter.
